Private 8 Hour Offshore Fishing Trip

Captain Trey and the Bentrod Fishing Charters crew know Grand Isle's offshore waters like the back of their hands. This full-day adventure takes you way beyond the marsh lines and into the deep blue Gulf, where the big fish live. We're talking serious offshore action - oil rigs, shrimp boat trails, and open water stretches that hold some of Louisiana's most prized gamefish. With 8 solid hours on the water and room for up to 6 anglers, this trip gives your group the time and space to really get after it. Whether you're chasing your first yellowfin or looking to add another amberjack to your count, Captain Trey's local knowledge puts you right where the fish are feeding.

What to Expect on the Water

Your day starts early at the Grand Isle marina, where Captain Trey will brief you on the game plan based on current conditions and what's been biting. The beauty of an 8-hour trip is flexibility - we can hit multiple spots, try different techniques, and really dial in on what's working. You'll be fishing around oil rigs where structure holds baitfish and attracts predators, following shrimp boat trails where the birds are working, and covering open water where schools of tuna cruise. The boat comes equipped with quality tackle, but feel free to bring your own gear if you've got favorites. Captain Trey's approach is all about options - he'll lay out what species we can target and let you decide whether you want to chase the deep-water heavyweights or focus on bottom fishing around structure. The Gulf can serve up different conditions, but that's part of what makes each trip unique.

Techniques & Tackle Setup

Offshore fishing in Grand Isle means adapting to what the Gulf throws at you. We'll be trolling spreads with lures and live bait when we're hunting tuna and cobia in open water, switching to heavy bottom rigs when we're working the amberjack and grouper around the rigs. Captain Trey runs tackle that can handle anything from 20-pound yellowfins to hefty amberjack that want to drag you back into the structure. Live bait plays a huge role out here - nothing beats a frisky blue runner or cigar minnow when the fish are finicky. We'll also deploy dead bait on the bottom when we're targeting red snapper and scamp grouper around the deeper structure. The key is reading the water, watching the electronics, and being ready to switch gears when the bite changes. Captain Trey's got the experience to put you on fish whether they're suspended in the water column or hugged tight to the bottom.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Greater Amberjack are the bulldogs of the Gulf, and the waters around Grand Isle hold some serious fish. These guys love structure - oil rigs, wrecks, and hard bottom areas where they can ambush baitfish. Expect fights that test your back and your drag system, with fish commonly running 40-80 pounds and the occasional monster pushing triple digits. Spring through fall offers the most consistent action, though winter can produce some of the biggest fish when conditions allow. What makes amberjack so addictive is their initial run - they'll peel line like a freight train before settling into that deep, powerful fight that makes your arms burn.

Cobia are one of the most exciting fish you can target in these waters, often showing up when you least expect them. These brown sharks, as some folks call them, cruise the surface around floating debris, oil rigs, and even follow rays in open water. They're curious fish that will come right up to the boat, giving you shot opportunities with sight fishing that gets your heart pumping. Peak season runs from March through June, but stragglers can show up well into fall. A good cobia in the 30-50 pound range will give you a fight that combines speed, power, and stubbornness - plus they're phenomenal on the dinner table.

Yellowfin Tuna represent the pinnacle of Gulf Coast offshore fishing. These speed demons cruise the deep water and current breaks, often in schools that create feeding frenzies when the conditions align. Summer months typically offer the most consistent opportunities, though spring and fall can produce excellent fishing when water temps are right. A 20-30 pound yellowfin will humble even experienced anglers with blistering runs and aerial displays, while the bigger fish - those 40-60 pounders - will test every component of your tackle. The sashimi-grade meat makes every battle worthwhile, and there's nothing quite like watching a yellowfin explode on a trolled lure in blue water.

Red Snapper remain a customer favorite whenever seasons allow, and the structure around Grand Isle holds some quality fish. These bottom dwellers love oil rigs and hard bottom areas where they can feed on crabs, smaller fish, and whatever the current brings their way. Federal and state seasons vary, so timing is crucial, but when they're open, expect steady action with fish in the 5-15 pound range and occasional slabs pushing 20-plus pounds. Red snapper are notorious bait stealers with soft mouths

Cobia

Cobia are unique fish that often get mistaken for sharks when you spot their dark brown bodies cruising the surface. These solitary hunters average 20-40 pounds but can hit 60+ and stretch over 4 feet long. You'll typically find them around buoys, oil platforms, and floating debris in 30-100 feet of water, though they love following rays and sharks in shallower water too. Spring through early fall is prime time, especially during their spawning runs. Guests get excited about sight-fishing for them since you can often see them coming to the boat. They're strong fighters and absolutely delicious - firm, white meat that's perfect for grilling. My advice: when you see one, drop a bucktail jig right in front of its nose and work it slowly. They're curious fish and will usually investigate.

Cobia

Greater Amberjack

Greater Amberjack are some of the strongest fighters you'll hook in the Gulf. These bluish-grey bruisers average 30-40 pounds but can push 100+, reaching up to 6 feet long. You'll find them around oil rigs, wrecks, and deep structure in 80-200+ feet of water. They're aggressive predators that'll hit live bait, jigs, or trolled lures without much hesitation. Spring through fall gives you the best action when they're actively feeding. What makes guests love targeting them is that raw power - they'll test your tackle and stamina with long, hard runs. The meat's excellent eating too, firm and white. Pro tip: once you hook one, keep steady pressure and try to turn their head up quickly before they dive back to structure and cut you off.

Greater Amberjack

Red Snapper

Red Snapper are the crown jewel of Gulf bottom fishing, with their bright red color and fighting spirit making them a favorite target. Most fish we catch run 2-8 pounds, but 15+ pounders show up regularly around the right structure. They live on hard bottom, wrecks, and oil rigs in 60-200 feet of water, holding tight to cover. During our limited seasons (typically summer months), they're actively feeding and easier to catch. What guests love most is the combination of steady action and outstanding table fare - sweet, flaky white meat that's hard to beat. They'll fight hard for their size, often trying to cut your line on structure. Best tip: use circle hooks with fresh cut bait, drop it to the bottom, and be ready to reel fast when they bite to keep them away from the structure.

Red Snapper

Scamp Grouper

Scamp Grouper are the premium eating fish of the grouper family, with chocolate brown bodies marked by darker blotches and distinctive long tail rays. They typically run 4-8 pounds, though 15+ pounders turn up on deeper structure. You'll find them around wrecks, ledges, and oil rigs in 75-300 feet, where they ambush prey from rocky hideouts. Spring offers the best action when they move shallower to spawn, but they bite year-round in deeper water. Guests appreciate the strong fight and exceptional taste - many consider it the best eating grouper. They're born female and change to male as they grow, living up to 50 years. Key trick: once hooked, keep constant pressure and reel fast to pull them away from structure before they cut you off on the rocks.

Scamp Grouper

Yellowfin Tuna

Yellowfin Tuna are the speed demons of our offshore waters, capable of hitting 50 mph with their torpedo-shaped bodies. Most of what we catch runs 30-80 pounds, but 100+ pounders show up regularly. These warm-blooded fish cruise the upper 300 feet of deep blue water, often around floating debris, oil rigs, and temperature breaks. Summer through fall typically offers the best fishing when bait concentrations draw them in closer. Guests love the explosive strikes and screaming runs - plus the sushi-grade meat makes for some of the best eating in the Gulf. They'll hit trolled ballyhoo, cedar plugs, or poppers when they're feeding on top. When marking fish deep but nothing's biting topside, switch to vertical jigging - that'll often trigger strikes from fish that won't come up.
